Music Review: Eb & Sparrow

Wellington-based Eb & Sparrow consists of honey-voiced singer-songwriter Ebony Lamb and her consummate supporting troupe of alt-country-inspired musos.

This, their third LP, was recorded early last year in the historic homestead of Ahiaruhe in the Wairarapa, yet it wouldn’t sound out of place at a late night roadhouse in the Pacific Northwest.

It’s a fine collection of laid back, spacious and gently charming tunes, with a healthy dose of lyrical darkness to offset the general good vibe.

The band is quietly brilliant; lapsteel, brass and strings provide texture, but at the heart of the record is Lamb’s indelible, soul-stirring vocal performance.

• Eb & Sparrow. Seeing Things. Deadbeat.
