Irish band Beoga is a five-piece musical outfit which will play its only Otago gig at Wanaka's Riverhouse venue on Wednesday as part of its first tour of New Zealand.

The band, whose Gaelic name translates as "lively", has been together since 2002 and hails from the northern Irish coast region of County Antrim.

The band is known among Irish music fans for the distinctive sound of its duelling accordion players Sean Og Graham and Damian McKee, and its rhythm section is backed by four-time All-Ireland bodhran champion Eamon Murray and pianist Liam Bradley.

The group's line-up is completed by singer and fiddler Niamh Dunne, proclaimed as one of Irish music's premier young female talents.

The group released its third album, The Incident last year and will be one of the feature artists at Nelson's folk music festival, Ceol Aneas.

Beoga's Wanaka gig at the Riverhouse comes after seven dates at venues from Auckland to Christchurch, before the band settles in for the four-gig stint in Nelson from June 4-7.

Beoga has been labelled one of the most popular and influential ensembles in modern Irish music after the releases of its first two albums, A Lovely Madness (2005) and 2007's Mischief .
