Fullbrook's voice a point of connection

Tiny Ruins, the project of Bristol-born, New Zealand-raised musician and songwriter Hollie Fullbrook, will perform in the intimate Taste Merchants on Friday.

Following the release of her debut album Some Were Meant For Sea in 2011, Fullbrook has released Haunted, a collection of older songs and b-sides recorded live by Jonathan Pearce (Tono and the Finance Company, Artisan Guns) on an eight-track tape machine in the bush surrounding of the Waipu Gorge.

While Haunted still relies on the restrained folk and new folk influences of her debut album, it's the blues that provides the overriding theme.

Thankfully, it's a form of expression that perfectly fits Fullbrook's voice. Recorded to sound as if she's half whispering from the seat beside you, there's an instant point of connection with the vivid stories and tales of her lyricism.

Best get to Taste Merchants early to guarantee entry as capacity is strictly limited.

• On the back of their Snapper EP being re-issued as part of the new Flying Nun/Captured Tracks partnership, Dunedin legends Snapper play a rare show at Chick's Hotel, tonight.

Spanning back to their 1992 debut album Shotgun Blossom, Snapper must be regarded as one of Flying Nun's greatest bands, with a raw edge that puts them at the head of the pack.

Founding member and songwriter Peter Gutteridge is having something of a renaissance of late, and this show is not to be missed.

Snapper will be joined by Chris Heazlewood, of King Loser, for the show.

• It's hard to follow a day, such as Feastock, but with their Pine Hill backyard now clear of three hundred attendees, festival remains, and scaffolding, Left or Right are playing Chick's Hotel to celebrate NZ Music month.

In support they'll have the gravelly-voiced Julian Temple and his band, which is playing two weeks of non-stop local shows before relocating to San Francisco in mid-June.
