On the Floor: Return of the Cobra

Cobra Khan
Cobra Khan
Auckland band Cobra Khan returns to Dunedin this month after a two-year absence.

Singer and guitarist Milon Williams says it doesn't seem that long.

"We came down with Kitsch and it was amazing. [We had a] full house, mad mosh pit, and I can remember having to buy some poor girl a drink because I accidentally hit her in the face with my guitar headstock."

Williams says the band has spent the interim in the studio.

"Well, we finished our album mid-2008, have been practising with [new bassist] Evan [Short], and working on our set amid various side projects."

For this week's gig the band is playing with a couple of Dunedin's rockier bands.

"We are playing with Soulseller and Incarnate. We are touring by ourselves down South, but I'm sure we'll be travelling companions at some stage on the night."

Following the band's nationwide tour, it has plans to release more music.

"We are releasing a double seven-inch later this year with some album material, and a bonus track. Also, we're planning on releasing a free downloadable EP/sampler around early September."

Cobra Khan plays Refuel on Friday, May 22.

Closer to home, the Otago heat of the nationwide Smokefreerockquest battle of high and intermediate school bands is taking place.

More than 600 bands have put their names forward nationwide, and the heat begins today at 2pm in Coronation Hall, Mosgiel. Nearly 30 bands or solo acts are scheduled to play.

From those who play today, 14 will be chosen to play at the regional final next month.

The competition turns 21 this year, and event director Pete Rainey says, "Kids have been forming bands forever but it still takes guts to get out of your garage and go on stage to play your own songs."

Dunedin's entries include Sewage, Distortion Buoy, tff, The Mint Hicks, Crawling Jelly, and the Class of '94.

Catch it:

The Otago final is at the Student Union Hall, 8pm on June 6.

Tickets are $15 from Dunedin Rockshop or $20 at the door.
