His musical style has been described as innovative and dreamy, containing elements of rock, blues and ballad.
But how does he describe it?
"I leave the description of my music to the listeners. I'm too busy innovating and dreaming, I guess.
"I am very happy to play in Dunedin. I've heard that [the] town rocks, [and] I can't wait."
The French national is in New Zealand on an artist's residency, thanks to the support of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Culture-France.
He says he will be inspired by New Zealand's natural beauty when it comes to producing his next album.
To that end, he says he has been busy so far.
"I've recorded a lot of demos since I arrived. My computer hardly ever cools down.
"I also wrote a little tale, translated into English by Sian Robyns, and waiting to be published here.
"I drew illustrations for this tale - I Love Wellington - and wrote a song about it, among other things.
"I enjoy meeting people here. There are very friendly. The village where I'm staying is quiet and very charming too.
"The scale of the landscape as much as the mood ... difficult to explain what can be inspiring, though.
"I also finished a song about Paris. I probably needed to be far from it to write the song. It's the antipodes' effect on me."
It is not the first time he has been affected by the charms of the antipodean.
"The woman I love is French and Kiwi ... We met 21 years ago in France."
He says writing songs here is not that different from writing at home.
"I never really stop thinking about songs anyway; writing songs is not like writing a book. It's in the air."
Thursday night's concert is being hosted by the Alliance Francaise de Dunedin; a non-profit organisation that promotes French language and culture across the world.
Monnet sings in French and English, so which one does he write in?
"I think I don't have any choice but French.
"I used to write songs in English in my teens but a (good) friend told me that I could be much more convincing, and moving, in French.
"I'm still sure he was right."
There will not be much singing in English on Thursday.
Monnet says Dunedin punters should expect a solo show.
"I play solo most of the time. My songs are suitable for it. Still, I sometimes play with a band in France."
