The laconic and iconic Mascis has achieved legendary status across 10 albums of ear-bleeding country, starting in the early '80s.
Mascis is touring in support of his solo album Tied to a Star, released in August, and will perform a mix of solo material from that and his previous solo album Several Shades of Why, as well as a selection from Dinosaur Jr's storied catalogue in both acoustic and electric mode.
Support comes from the cathartic elemental soundscapes of Kahu, the solo outfit of Tristan Dingemans, of Mountaineater and High Dependency Unit fame.
Turner, best known as the guitarist for the wild, raging and powerful Australian instrumental band Dirty Three, will play a stand-alone show at Chick's Hotel next Thursday.
As well as his eight albums and several EPs with the Aussie trio, Turner has also collaborated with American singer-songwriter Cat Power and moody indie statesman Bonnie ''Prince'' Billy as a backing musician with fellow Dirty Three member Jim White in the mid-1990s.
Turner's discography, however, stretches back to the late '70s when he played in Melbourne bands Sick Things (1979-88), The Moodists (1983-84), Fungus Brains (1982-87), and Venom P. Stinger (1985-96).
His most recent solo album Don't Tell the Driver, was released in 2013, and was praised for Turner's distinctive guitar playing, and contemplative, somnolent vibe.
Turner will be accompanied by drummer Greg Cairns (MarineVille, Constant Pain).
Support comes from David Kilgour and the Heavy Eights, who are sure to play cuts from last year's excellently relaxed End Times Undone, and sound, drone, and experimental laureate Alistair Galbraith.
Of course, it would be remiss not to mention the incredible New Zealand music on offer at Chick's tonight.
Auckland art-rock quartet GPOGP headlines the night, which also features Wellington's ethereal Seth Frightening and the transcendent beauty and agony of I.E Crazy.
