CD reviews: Peter Silberman

Acclaimed for his work with The Antlers, Peter Silberman has released a debut solo album (or, at six songs, mini-album) that documents his experience with a hearing impairment that prompted him to leave his Brooklyn home for a secluded setting in upstate New York.

He gradually re-introduced sound into his world, gently playing a nylon-strung acoustic guitar and whisper-singing. The result is sparse, haunting and continues the emotional odyssey he began with The Antlers on Hospice, Burst Apart and Familiars.

Borne of a necessity for silence, Impermanence also touches on the Miles Davis quote: "It’s not the notes you play, it’s the notes you don’t play."

 Peter Silberman. Impermanence. Inertia/Anti- Records.

Three and a half stars (out of five)
