CD Reviews: Deirdre Newall

Former member of Tui Award-winning Dunedin group Delgirl, Deirdre Newall's move to explore fresh paths a couple of years ago has resulted in an album that benefits from her collaboration with musicians unafraid to twist and warp musical genres.

In other hands, Tiny Pieces of Eight could have come across as a homespun workbook, yet there is magic aplenty here, particularly when Newall's hints of nasal Americana and gypsy jazz collide with the skewed sonic palette of Chris Heazlewood (guitar, drums) and the dark, slinky grooves of Grant Ramsay (guitar, backing vocals).

  • Deirdre Newall. Tiny Pieces of Eight. Independent.
    Four stars out of five.
