CD reviews: Asgeir

Apparently more popular at home than compatriots Bjork and Sigur Ros, Icelander Asgeir Trausti has followed his debut, In the Silence, with an effort that might be borne on the afterglow (sorry) of that initial success, but suggests he has reached something of a crossroads.

The acoustic guitars are often well down in the mix as piano-driven, electronic textures dominate, providing this sophomore effort with both its strengths and its weaknesses.

Examples: Unbound is delightfully angular, quirky yet focused as Asgeir shows off his compositional abilities and a falsetto to die for; yet I Know You Know’s attempt at a deeper rhythmic pulse is packaged as throwaway tropical house. File under patchy but promising.
