Prosecutors say police have presented potential evidence in a jewellery theft case against Lindsay Lohan, but they don't expect to make an immediate decision on charges.

Los Angeles County District Attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons says police turned over the results of their investigation on Wednesday afternoon. The "Mean Girls" star is being investigated for grand theft after a jewellery store reported a $US2500 necklace missing.

Detectives obtained  a search warrant to try to retrieve the necklace from Lohan's home, but it was turned in at a substation on Tuesday evening.

Gibbons said prosecutors will not decide whether to file charges against Lohan on Wednesday.
