Film review: The Lorax (G)

Young Ted lives in Thneedville, a city where everything is totally artificial, including the trees, air and food.

Starring: Zac Efron (High School Musical), Danny DeVito (Twins), Ed Helms (The Hangover).
Director: Chris Renaud (Despicable Me).
Screening: Friday, April 13 to Wednesday, April 18, 11am, 1.15pm.
4 stars (out of 5)

Nothing grows there, but the 12-year-old decides to set out to find a real tree, if only to win over the beautiful Audrey (voiced by Taylor Swift). In true Dr Seuss fashion, though, nothing is straightforward, and kids and grown-ups will find much to like as Ted finds out the story of the mythical Lorax (De Vito), former guardian of the forest.

But are there any trees left outside Thneedville?

This is the fourth Dr Seuss adaptation to hit the screen and my favourite so far. Directed with flair by Renaud, the movie even starts with the same singing minions we saw in Despicable Me.

I don't know what it is, but I was laughing like a drain when they starting singing.

The songs are few and far between, and that suited me just fine. I like a musical film as long as the songs are good. And these are very good. The animation is first-rate, and the cast members do a brilliant job voicing their respective characters.

The Lorax himself kept reminding me of someone and I couldn't think whom. Then it hit me: the dad from American Chopper! Or is that just me?

Take the kids and enjoy. This is a great movie for the whole family, with a nice message.
