When Stephen meets his great-aunt Lola for the first time he is a little tense.

After all, he's a shy 10-year-old and she's nearly 80. What could they have to say to each other, even if she does send him presents of $10 twice a year. She used to be a teacher but now she just seems cross and a bit frightening.

And to top it off Stephen's mum says they are staying with Aunt Lola until her birthday, three weeks away!

Author Bill Condon was a journalist and it shows in his skilful economy with words, and a sharp eye for the detail of everyday life. But it's his sense of humour which sets this book apart.

I read it in one sitting and enjoyed the growing relationship between Lola and Stephen, laughing out loud several times. It's a warm affirmation of family, friendship and trust, and thankfully free of sentimentality.

Ages 12+.
