The standard of entries in the Zelko Blossom Festival Art Exhibition continues to rise every year, Central Otago Art Society president Nigel Wilson says.

This year's festival art exhibition attracted more than 150 entries, mostly paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolours from artists throughout Otago and Southland.

The show opened on Thursday and the final day for viewing is tomorrow, when the people's choice winner will be announced.

Alexandra artist Richard Parsons took the top prize with his oil painting titled Save Our Wild Rivers.

First runner-up was Susie Ruddenklau, of Wanaka, with Child's Play and the second runner-up in third place was Alexandra artist Nigel Wilson's Orchard Series.

A first merit award was given to Quantum Shift by Lorraine Bennett, of St Bathans, and a second merit award was presented to Olwyn Dykes, of Alexandra, for About Circles.

Commendations were presented to Anna Enright and Denis Kent, both of Alexandra.

Guest artist Alan Waters, of Bannockburn, judged the awards and had five watercolours on display in the exhibition.
