International guests will join potters from throughout New Zealand exhibiting work at Otago Museum next week.

The national potters exhibition opens on Friday, April 9, and runs until April 25.

Featuring more than 100 works ranging from functional to sculptural pieces, the exhibition coincides with the New Zealand Society of Potters annual conference.

One of the organisers, Nicole Kolig, said the guest artists would include Huang Yunpeng, from Shanghai, who was considered the foremost expert on traditional Chinese decorations.

Organisers had taken advantage of the relationships established with Dunedin's sister city of Shanghai during construction of the Chinese Garden to secure Huang, Ms Kolig said.

Through his work at the Shanghai Museum, he had access to authentic decorations and was now reviving this tradition in his own studio.

Other guests included Kurt Spurey, from Vienna, whose work was mostly sculptural, Victor Greenaway, an Australian working in Italy, who specialised in thrown and altered forms in porcelain, and Dunedin artists Jo Howard and Kate Fitzharris.

Huang would give a public demonstration at Otago Museum on Monday, April 5, at 6pm, while Spurey and Greenaway would give public talks and demonstrations at the museum on Friday, April 9, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

The latter pair would be joined by Nancy Earth, an American who is completing her PhD at the University of Otago and has a special interest in Japanese ceramics.

The conference will be held at Otago Polytechnic next weekend, April 10 and 11.

Fusion 2010 has attracted about 90 artists, 40 of whom will take masterclasses earlier in the week.

The event is open to members and those planning to join the society.
