The Royal New Zealand Ballet brings family fun to Dunedin this weekend in its final production for the year, Peter Pan.

The colourful production has been described as "a cross between the Muppets and a ballet" and is aimed at young and old alike.

New Zealand ballet legend Sir Jon Trimmer leads the charge as Captain Hook and you'll also meet his bloodthirsty pirate gang the Lost Boys, a cantankerous fairy Tinkerbell, a large, hungry crocodile and learn the art of flying.

There's a prize for the best costume at every show and children are encouraged to pull on an eye patch and pirate hat, grab a sword, or don a pair of fairy wings, and join in the fun.

You can also meet and have a photo taken with the Peter Pan characters at 11am on Saturday at Whitcoulls in Dunedin.

The performers will also be meeting the public for a chat after the matinee show on Sunday.

The Royal New Zealand Ballet presents Peter Pan at 7.30pm on Saturday and 2.30pm on Sunday.
