The classical voice performance students will present staged excerpts from this opera in a production called Die Zauberflote: Magic Flute Moments.
This production has been designed to give the singers practical stage skills, which they can use alongside their developing vocal skills.
The excerpts chosen are those which could be appropriately cast using current students.
Thus there are two different sets of ladies, two sets of genii, two Taminos, two Papagenos and two Paminas, thus allowing as many students as possible to gain stage experience.
The singing is in German and Prof John Drummond has written, and will perform a linking narrative in English, which preserves the integrity of the story of the opera.
Opera Otago plans to present the whole opera next year.
