Portraits in woodcuts

An exhibition of woodcut prints will be unveiled at Port Chalmers this weekend.

"Woodblocks" is a series of large portrait works by Christchurch artist Sam Harrison.

The exhibition is at Makers Gallery in Port Chalmers, beside the Tall Poppy Cafe, from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Ukeleles make wall of sound

The Wellington International Ukelele Orchestra struts back into Otago on its national tour today.

The orchestra will play concerts at 7.30 tonight in the Oamaru Opera House, followed by 8pm at the University of Otago main common room tomorrow and 7.30pm at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Saturday.

The orchestra had to relocate its Dunedin performance to the university main common room after the scheduled venue, Sammy's, was temporarily closed last month by the fire service.

"If you've never seen 12 ukuleles played simultaneously, this is a must-see," orchestra member and Flight of the Conchords actor Bret McKenzie says.

The orchestra specialises in transforming old favourites and pop hits into a ukelele wall of sound.

Bohemian folk from Australia

Australian folk act Bohemian Nights plays in Warrington and Dunedin this weekend.

Violinist Ernie Gruner and accordionist/singer Phil Carroll perform music ranging from Gypsy to klezmer, Middle Eastern, French, Italian, Russian, jazz and tango.

The multicultural musicians have produced theatre and dance events for Russian, Armenian, Jewish, Turkish, French and Italian communities.

Bohemian Nights performs at Warrington Memorial Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday and at 7.30pm on Sunday at St Martins Hall, Northumberland St, Northeast Valley.

Ceroc dancers competing

The South Island Ceroc Championships will be held in Dunedin this weekend.

Canadian west coast swing champions Myles Munroe and Tessa Cunningham will be special guests at the championships.

The pair are ranked in the top five in the world in west coast swing - which is comparable to Ceroc dancing, or modern jive - and teach, judge and perform around the world.

Auckland Latin tango specialists John and Felicity Flowers will also be performing at the event.

Dancing with the Stars' Aaron Gilmore will host the event finals as well as taking dance partner Lauren James for a spin.

The South Island Ceroc Championships will be held from 7pm on Saturday at the Edgar Centre.

Personal journeys in public

A play about personal identity and culture in New Zealand premieres at Allen Hall tonight.

In-Compass: A play about Navigation follows characters at different stages in life.

The play was written by University of Otago theatre studies programme master's candidate Erica Newlands and features Clare Thomson, Charlotte Waalkens, Lyndon Katene, Emere Leitch-Munro, Martyn Roberts, Jennifer Aitken, Kane Holmes and Nylla Ah-Kuoi.

"We use the theme of navigation to explore issues associated with seeking out a personal identity within Aotearoa New Zealand," Newlands says.

The nine actors in the play contributed their personal journeys to the story.

In-Compass: A play about Navigation is at Allen Hall at 7.30 tonight, tomorrow and Saturday and at 4pm on Sunday.
