Sean Duffell, Aaron Manuel and Harry Skipper started a 50m mural in Hoyts Lane last Friday and plan to have it finished by this weekend.
The mural spells out Dunedin, using historical and cultural elements and motifs.
"We've used about 80 cans of spray paint on it so far," Skipper said yesterday.
The work includes local views and elements of our gold rush, Maori, Scottish and Chinese heritage.
"There's something in there for everyone. It's got that earth, wind, sea and sky thing happening."
The mural has even caught the attention of Auckland graffiti artists "Cut Collective", who unveiled their latest exhibition in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery last weekend.
The artists were so taken with the mural, they contributed a Ritchie Rich icon that features in their exhibition.
However, staff in the neighbouring Dunedin Public Art Gallery building were initially less than enamoured with the work when paint fumes from the alley were sucked into its air-conditioning intakes.
A specially built chimney soon sorted the problem out.
