Engineers would assess the structure once the swells had subsided, Dunedin City Council transport delivery manager Ben Hogan said.
Until then, the stairs had been closed.
Engineers would also assess damage to sand sausages and bags to the east of the wall, Mr Hogan said.
Depending on the assessment, repairs would be carried out as soon as possible, he said.
The cost had yet to be determined.

When will these halfwits realize you don't hang stairs like that on a sea wall, I'm just waiting for it to take out one of those platforms with people on it then there will be hell to pay for this blatant stupidity, and the fence is a disgrace.
You have to wonder how anyone could design such inappropriate steps in the first place and how anyone could sign off the design. This was incompetence at the highest level.
From what I recall, the contract was awarded to a company which had never actually built a sea wall before. Still, what could possibly do wrong, eh? Give ‘em a go.
The problems began almost immediately, including the repeated disintegration of the wheelchair ramp (remember that feature, folks?) but somehow nobody ever managed to get any remedial work or recompense for all that public expenditure.
And don’t even get started on the review conducted some years back by overseas specialist engineers… not that we, the plebs, ever got to read it - we paid for it and it was buried. What a show…
