Dunedin's Great Taste Buffet Restaurant has sought to convince the city’s liquor licensing agency that its staff will have sufficient experience to manage alcohol there.

The St Andrew St restaurant recently added a former duty manager from Queenstown’s Nugget Point Hotel, Charlene Liu, to its staff and she appeared before the district licensing committee yesterday, as a hearing continued into the site’s suitability for an on-licence.

Satisfying the committee that the restaurant’s duty managers have sufficient experience is the final hurdle for the business to clear to get its licence.

An application for temporary authority to sell liquor was rejected earlier this year after it was admitted the business had sold alcohol without a licence.

During the subsequent application for a liquor licence, the suitability of the applicant was found not to be a problem.

Committee chairman Colin Weatherall said a decision could be expected soon.
