Otago will start its national provincial championships in Auckland against two familiar foes.

Otago will take on Tasman this morning at the Akarana course and Aorangi this afternoon.

It played Aorangi earlier this summer in the South Island provincial championships in Ashburton while Tasman is a regular opponent. Otago will then take on North Harbour tomorrow morning and Bay of Plenty in the afternoon.

Only one round of games is played on Thursday but Otago has the bye so will not play at all.

On Friday it takes on Taranaki in the morning and Waikato in the afternoon.

The side has managed to avoid heavyweights Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury in the tournament draw.

Southland has not entered a team.

Otago inished ninth last year and is hoping to go as well if not better.

The side is led by Sumin Kang at No1 and Yoonae Jeong at No2.

Both are from Queenstown. Kang (15) has been been in the team for several years while for Jeong (12) is in her first year

The team is completed by Abigael Crawford, of St Clair, who did not play last year, Kathryn Baker, of Taieri Lakes, and Becs Calder of Omakau.

The course at Akarana, which is south of Avondale, should be a good test for the players.

The tournament was won last year by Auckland for the fourth year in a row.

That's a delightful piece of journalism. A detailed article that gives no clue as to what they are playing!
