The Green Island landfill's existing consent will expire in 2023, and the Dunedin City Council has been preparing a business case about the future of waste in the city and a potential new landfill at Smooth Hill.
The Smooth Hill site, bordered by McLaren Gully Rd and Big Stone Rd, was first identified as a potential landfill in 1992.
Dunedin City Council group manager waste and environmental solutions Chris Henderson said decisions would be made by councillors in early August on how public consultation about the site would be carried out.
"Consultation and engagement is expected to take place as part of the 2021-31 10 Year Plan process, as well as the resource consent process under the Resource Management Act."
He said detailed site investigations had been completed by staff and subsequent reports were undergoing a final review.
"They are expected to be signed off about the end of July."
Funding considerations would be decided for inclusion in the 2021-31 10 Year Plan.
A business case about the development of future waste diversion and waste disposal facilities for Dunedin would be presented to councillors for consideration before August, he said.
