Contractors made their final checks yesterday before reopening the bridge that has been closed to vehicles between east and west Dundas St, in North Dunedin, since late February.

The work is part of the Leith Flood Protection Scheme, which began more than a decade ago.

Pedestrian access over the bridge was reopened two months ago.

‘‘The bridge’s closure for much of this year has been necessary to safely and properly install a culvert on its west bank, which will reduce the impact of floodwaters in a 1-in-a-100-year flood event,’’ Otago Regional Council operations general manager Gavin Palmer said.

I would invite all the critics to head down there and have a look at what all the hard work and time spent has been about. You may well have been inconvienced for a short moment in your lives, but look at what these guys and gals have done. Some of these projects aren't exactly, 'click, pay, and recieve' like you do with a pizza. Just saying...
