It aims to encourage the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to accelerate the double-laning of the state highway between Queenstown Airport and the BP roundabout.
It also calls for a ban on cars parking along that stretch of the highway, to coincide with the completion of the new double-lane Kawarau Falls Bridge — due to be completed late next year — and imminent BP roundabout improvements.
At present, the NZTA had no plans to carry out that work for up to five years.
Mr Barclay said yesterday the petition website, fixfranktonstraffic.co.nz, had gone live. He encouraged as many Wakatipu residents as possible to visit the site and leave their name.
In 2015, more than 1.5million visitors passed through Queenstown Airport, making their way along that section of the state highway heading towards Queenstown or Central Otago.
That did not include the people travelling along the route from Southland.
Daily, about 22,000 vehicles used the stretch of road and airport users parked on the side of the road on average for four days at a time, Mr Barclay said.
Earlier this month he held a public meeting for directly affected Frankton residents who supported a petition.
If the petition was successful, the Queenstown Lakes District Council had agreed to implement some form of resident parking for Frankton residents, so the problem was not simply moved to outlying streets, Mr Barclay said.
He hoped to present something to the NZTA before Christmas.
