A miscalculation ended with a truck being wedged under a central Dunedin overpass this morning.

A TNL Freighting truck got stuck at the intersection with Vogel St after misjudging how much room there was under the overpass.

A witness at the scene said the crash happened about 7.40am.

"I just heard a big bang when it struck the overpass and heard it scraping against the underside.

"There is some concrete from the overpass on the road," he said.

The underpass has a sign giving the height limit as 3m.

Police said they were only alerted to the job more than an hour later, and had made the council aware of what had happened.

"The road is clear now, however there was a chunk taken out of the bridge."

Police would be investigating exactly how the crash happened.

The underside of the bridge had been damaged, but the bridge was still open, she said.

Dunedin City Council transport delivery manager Josh von Pein said council transport staff had visited Vogel St to check for any obvious damage to the bridge structure, or debris on the road.

"No debris was visible at around 10am today, and no significant concerns were raised from our initial observations of the bridge structure.

"A more thorough inspection will be completed soon by our specialist bridge consultant."

"Police would be investigating exactly how the crash happened"

I'm no forensic scientist, but I would hazard a guess that the underside of the bridge is lower than the top of the truck.

I'd say the police or the truck driver hasn't heard the joke of the truck trying to get under a bridge and all the experts want to make the bridge higher, when the little boy says let the tires down on the truck.

Yep, I think you might have uncovered something there DanF. I dread to think how much they're going to spend getting someone else to tell them this though.
