Not cheap but this is device of the year

It was hard work continuing to avoid the Gen-i manager who sent a HTC Touch Pro2 phone for review.

He wanted it back.

Telecom has added this phone to its summer line-up at a fairly hefty price of $1499, but it is really more than a phone.

The Touch Pro2 is aimed at a business market and after an hour or two of playing around on the phone, the strength of the features emerged.

A simple-to-use touch screen, described overseas as "gorgeous", is a delight to use.

The TouchFlo 3D home screen gives finger-touch access to the most important functions, such as favourite contacts, text messages, email, calendar, internet and weather.

The zoom bar below the touch screen lets you zoom in on a web page or a photo in the album.

For those people jealous of their iPhone-zooming colleagues, the Pro2 gives parity.

The qwerty keyboard fits bloke-type fingers and is easy to use.

It has a spacious layout, with large buttons and one of the best, if not the best, keyboard this reviewer has tried.

Sitting with the Touch Pro2 on my knee, email and text messaging were easy as the tilting WVGA screen displays 262,000 colours at 480x800 pixels.

That last bit of research came from the internet, but you can tell that the screen is top of the range as it is easily navigated in sunlight or semi-shade.

Sitting in the stand at Riccarton racecourse and doing email and research was no problem with the Pro2.

The 3.2 megapixel camera provided good results and the phone gave quick access to social network sites, where you could automatically upload your favourite snaps.

In my case, it was a day at the races in Christchurch.

Sometimes, finding the actual phone facility was complicated when you were using another feature, but that came down more to concentrating too hard on one thing and not paying attention to others.

Familiarity with the phone would solve all those niggles.

The only down side to the phone was its size.

I continued to keep it in a cover as it was a review model, but found it was too uncomfortable to keep it in a shirt pocket all day.

The Pro2 is more than a phone. It is this reviewer's device of the year.
