Google Play Music to offer podcasts

Google is getting back into the podcast business.

The web behemoth used to have a podcast app - Google Listen - but it was killed off in August 2012.

In a blog post, Google said it planned to offer podcasts on Google Play Music, giving podcasters access to millions of new listeners.

A launch date for the service was not revealed, but a portal has been provided for US podcasters to start uploading their shows before it launches.

"Along with direct searches and browsing for podcasts, the service will connect new listeners with podcasts based on what they're doing, how they're feeling, or what they're interested in," Google Play Music product manager Elias Roman said.

"Similar to our contextual playlists for music, this will give podcast fans and new listeners a way of finding and listening to content that's unique to Google Play Music."

Google has been working with some high profile podcasters and networks including Tim Ferriss, Nerdist/Legendary, Slate/Panapoly, Dave Ramsey, HBO, Head Gum and HowStuffWorks to ensure their shows are offered when the service is launched.
