Spike as spammers gear up for Valentine's Day

Spammers are gearing up for Valentine's Day on February 14 with offers including product spam, gift cards, personalised cards and financial spam.

Symantec, the maker of Norton anti-virus software, has been observing Valentine's Day-related spam since early January, but as the day approaches, there has been a noticeable spike in product spam related to special events.

Included in the special events is the start of the Cricket World Cup, with spammers making the most of the event by offering fake tickets to the final game.

Symantec yesterday recommended:Stop and think before you click on links and attachments.

• Be cautious when opening unsolicited or unexpected email and only purchase tickets from legitimate online sources.

• Never respond to emails or cold calls purporting to be from banks or financial institutions.

• Get a stronger password and change it at least twice a year.

• Know what your children are doing online.

• Install security software and update it regularly.

• Turn on automatic updates so that all your software receives the latest fixes.
