Otago and Southland building apprentices have made the cut for a national scholarship.
PlaceMakers chief executive John Beveridge said apprentices Aaron Farrell, of Dunedin, Ben Bringans, of Oamaru, and Michael Perkins, of Gore, were three of the 12 apprentices selected to have their Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation tuition fees paid.
Mr Farrell (21), a McGeady Builders carpentry apprentice, said the scholarship would save him between $3200 and $3600 during his four-year apprenticeship.
The apprenticeship was hard work but great fun and the future employment prospects looked promising, he said.
Mr Bringans (19), a building apprentice with Banks Building, said he was six months in to a four-year apprenticeship and the scholarship would mean he could invest in more tools.
Mr Perkins (17), a Peter Goodger Builders apprentice, said he decided to be a builder's apprentice because he wanted to work outside and not be stuck in an office.
The scholarship would mean he could buy some tools, including a new circular saw.
