International and domestic passenger numbers using Queenstown Airport continue to rise and the resort closed in on half a million overseas tourists arriving by air in the year to the end of March.

For the 12 months, 459,616 international passengers passed through the airport, up 21.5% on the previous year.

Domestically there was a 14% increase, to 1.12 million passengers. In data released by listed Auckland Airport on Friday.

Auckland's total international arrivals for the year ending March were up 8% to 4.34 million and international departures were up 7% at 4.26 million.

The data showing Queenstown aircraft movements were up almost 13% year, from 11,807 to 13,330 aircraft, comes after confirmation last week 10,000 Chinese visitors will be attending Amway conferences in Queenstown over four months in 2018.

Excluding New Zealanders from the data of top 10 arrivals to Auckland Airport, Australian numbers for March were up 17.7% on the previous month to 82,926, China rose 25.2% to 35,670, US passengers rose 20.3% to 25,014 and the UK was up 10% to 19,613.

Auckland, which owns 24.99% of Queenstown Airport, cited several new or additional services for its March increases, including flights from Kuala Lumpur, Rarotonga and Dubai, several of which improved connections from elsewhere.

South American visitor arrivals were up 89%, Canada up 20.6% and US 20.3%.
