Port stopwork meeting postponed

A stopwork meeting at Port Otago today has been postponed while management considers a counter-offer from the Maritime Union of New Zealand over a contentious restructuring proposal - costing 10 port jobs.

The pair are at loggerheads over proposed introduction of a new "vessel operations team", a proposal which was again rejected by the union after a meeting with management yesterday.

However, MUNZ Port Chalmers secretary Phil Adams said a counter offer "addressing some of Port Otago's concerns" had been put forward and Port Otago have until Monday to consider it.

He was adamant yesterday that an operations team would be "divisional" in the workplace and if the counter-offer was not accepted a stopwork meeting could go ahead next week.
