Auckland-based tug Pacific Way, owned by a marine engineering company, flanked by the barges Tahi (left) and Rua, began towing the barges to Napier yesterday.
The 32m-long by 6.5m-wide split-hopper barges, owned by Port Otago, are expected to take three to four days to reach Napier, where they will be leased for use in dredging operations for up to three months.
