The two recently-appointed Gen-i managers in Otago-Southland say the arrival of Telecom's fast mobile broadband XT network has changed the game in the way they deliver high-speed mobile technology to customers.

Gen-i has been singled out by Telecom chief executive Paul Reynolds as an area which will help drive the growth both in New Zealand and Australia of New Zealand's largest listed company.

Gen-i Otago-Southland sales manager Chris Dawson said that previously, any constraints around providing mobile technology to business and enterprise customers had been around the speed of the network.

"Now, the constraint is the devices, not the network. It's a given that the network is fast."

The XT network had a download speed of 8Mbps now, increasing to 14Mbps by the end of the year.

That was better than being on broadband at home, he said.

Customers in the region were becoming increasingly aware of the requirement for mobility.

Their workforce was out in the field all of the time rather than being out part of the time and in the office for the rest of the time.

The new XT network, which extended throughout the region, gave businesses the chance to provide their customers with on-the-spot service through mobile devices, Mr Dawson said.

Specialists manager Peter Thomas said that up to the launch of the XT network, compromises had been made on mobility but that was a thing of the past.

Gen-i was focusing more on the communications and information technology as the technology developed.

The group employed more than 40 people in the region specialising in different parts of the ICT industry, he said.
