Lighting Direct is thought to be the first company to move out of the new hospital zone to new premises.
Chief executive Dean Fulford said the company was very happy to find the new space in a heritage building at 90 Crawford St.
‘‘We’ve been there for 30 years ... it was one of our earliest stores,’’ he said.
The lights shop needed a place that had good exposure but it had been hard finding a good retail space in a Dunedin market that was ‘‘landlocked for retail’’.
The new shop included a design room as well as interactive displays, which Mr Fulford said was ‘‘well received by customers’’.
