George St institution Huzur Kebab is branching out into the mobile catering business.

As well as trading from its central city base, owner Mustafa Boztas has set up a food trailer to cater from various sites around Dunedin.

Initially the trailer will operate during lunch time near the University of Otago, with plans to also trade at events around the city.

"We want to be closer to the customers and serve them in a much better way," he said.

Mr Boztas, who wanted to become an engineer, dropped his plans after he was injured in the March 15 terror attack in Christchurch.

He said after the pain and trauma he was not able to complete his studies and he moved to Turkey.

After spending nearly 14 months on an extended holiday after the Covid-19 lockdown, he returned to Dunedin in 2021.

"I wanted to be an engineer but now I am a chef and a businessman and I am happy," he said.

Mr Boztas also said that he was getting a good response to his plans to start a trailer business.

"I had posted the picture on Facebook and the response I got was wonderful," he said.

He bought the trailer from Christchurch and started operating it last week.

Huzur Kebab, which sold through online platforms like UberEats, has now stopped online delivery.

Mr Boztas said managing online and offline orders was difficult, and that he liked to meet customers, talk to them, and listen to feedback.

"Through online sales I can’t see my customers. I want them to come to my store," he said.

The trailer would offer the lunch menu now served in the restaurant, he said.

During weekdays the food trailer would be in the city and during the weekends he planned to take it further afield.

The trailer requires three staff, including Mr Boztas.

"I would like to listen to the customers and then will decide on the future plans," he said.
