Queenstown's reputation as a mountain-biking destination is set to take off following Skyline Queenstown's decision to reintroduce gondola-assisted riding with an extended season from September.

Since January, Skyline has used gondolas to ferry mountain bikes uphill to their complex, where riders disembark to take on trails in the Ben Lomond Reserve.

This weekend is the last opportunity for riders to use the service before it closed for winter.

The gondola-assisted access is a first for New Zealand and mountain-biking project co-ordinator Brad Rowe said that based on the success of the joint Queenstown Mountain Bike Club-Skyline project, an extended eight-month season had been announced.

Overseas riders had told Mr Rowe that New Zealanders were "so lucky" to have such a set-up. In addition to a huge level of local support, there had been a lot of "constructive feedback" to work on for next season.

One point Mr Rowe said had already been improved was "trying to please both parties" in making sure that catering for mountain bikers was not done at the expense of other customers.

"There are still a few things to sort out for next season but we think we have made a good start."

Gondola access was a pivotal point in allowing for the creation of this year's inaugural Queenstown Bike Festival, for which the gondola was used extensively in several of the festival's key mountain-biking events.

The festival aimed to attract national and international interest in Queenstown as a mountain-biking destination, with organiser Geoff Hunt comparing the resort to the overseas "biking meccas" of Whistler, in Canada, and Morzine, in France.

Skyline general manager Blair Deasy said he expected the extended 2011-12 season would focus even more attention to Queenstown.

" We are very excited to be running a second season of mountain biking and we can't wait to see the bike scene in Queenstown grow to reach its full potential."

Skyline will host a "ride more" end-of-season event for season pass holders on Sunday, which includes giveaways, fancy dress, and a "mega-train" mass ride leaving from the Skyline complex at 4pm.

Festivities will carry on at the Dux De Lux at its conclusion.
