Fonterra has withdrawn from the New Zealand market its Anlene range of bone nutrition dairy products due to poor sales.

A spokeswoman for the dairy company said Anlene had been available in New Zealand as both liquid milk and yoghurt, but sales in 12 countries across Asia, where it was sold as a powdered nutritional supplement, and Australia, where it was sold as fresh milk, were continuing.

Anlene fresh milk and yoghurt was launched in NZ in 2006, but yoghurt was discontinued in June this year, and milk discontinued from the end of October

The spokeswoman said Anlene was created in Asia in 1991 to support bone health and was recognised as the leading high calcium milk brand in Asia and the Middle East, with sales of Anlene products now representing almost one-fifth of Fonterra's revenue in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Other high calcium- and vitamin D-rich dairy products were available, she said.
