Some wool lines lift

Demand from Chinese buyers pushed up prices for some lines of wool at the South Island sale on Thursday, but 39% of the 16,700 bales on offer was still passed for failing to reach the reserve of growers.

New Zealand Wool Services International reported Chinese buyers requiring quick shipment pushed up prices for fine crossbred wool by 2% to 4% and lamb's fleece by 2% to 6%.

Coarse fleece rose 1% to 3% and poor coarse fleece, lifted off a low base, rose by 4% to 6%, but types that were not targeted continued to sag.

Carpet-type fleece ease 2% to 4%, oddments, which remained difficult to sell, slipped a further 3.5% to 8%.

Similarly any coarse wool with faults or high seed content met with restricted buyer interest.
