Soil ecologist to speak in Cromwell

An expert Australian soil ecologist will be the guest speaker at a two-day farming soils seminar in Cromwell next week.

Dr Christine Jones has spent 25 years working with Australian farmers to build carbon levels in their soil, which she said ultimately improved the health of plants and animals and farm profitability.

Dr Jones is the founder of the Australian Soil Carbon Accreditation Scheme, which aims to show farmers how to increase soil carbon.

The scheme was underwritten by a philanthropic trust which pays farmers $25 a tonne from carbon dioxide sequestered in the soil.

The two-day conference, on June 30 and July 1, will be addressed by climate-change scientists, organic farmers and related industry experts.

The conference is organised by Sustainable Growing Solution and Soil Food Web New Zealand.
