Dunedin property keeping up

Dunedin residential housing values are matching national gains during the past three months, but the main centres are losing some steam.

Quotable Value data out yesterday showed national residential values increased further in March, booking a 1.3% increase over the past three months and a 6.5% increase over the past year. Dunedin values increased 1.7% during the past 3 months, and were up 4.4% on last year.

Quotable Value research director, Jonno Ingerson, said while nationwide values were still increasing, there were signs the rate of increase had slowed during recent months in Auckland, Hamilton, Christchurch and Dunedin.

''The provincial centres remain variable, with no universal trends evident either over the past three months or the past year,'' Mr Ingerson said.

Compared to the market peak of late-2007, national values were up 3.3%, while Dunedin was up 0.8% on the peak period.

Nationally, values were up 1.1% on a year ago, at $429,000. Central Otago was up 1.1% at $293,500, Queenstown Lakes up 5.1% at $627,500 and Dunedin up 4.4% at $284,350. Auckland's sub-districts had the highest values. North Shore, Auckland city (central, east and south) and Manukau east were in a range between $643,000 and $901,000.
