The chief executive of Dunedin International Airport has resigned, after almost 23 years of service with the company.

Richard Roberts will step down from his position on September 30 after joining the team in March 1999. He had signalled his intention to leave in July this year.

The company said a recruitment processes had begun for his replacement.

‘‘Now is the right time for us to consider new leadership for a new phase at Dunedin Airport,’’ Mr Roberts said today.

Under his leadership, the airport had seen a growth in passenger numbers, support for the local economy, and what it called a ‘‘people-first approach’’ to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Roberts said his time with the airport had been rewarding and he was proud of his team's achievements.

‘‘I look forward to watching from the sidelines as to what is next for Dunedin Airport.’’

The airport's board is set to make the appointment of the new chief executive in the last quarter of this year.
