The computer-generated graphics of the flooding in Brisbane being shown on Australia's Nine Network are another example of the innovative technology being developed in Dunedin.

Animated Research Ltd managing director Ian Taylor was contacted by the Nine Network asking if the graphics the Dunedin-based company had produced of Brisbane for the Ashes cricket series could be "flooded".

"Gosh, I didn't know. I said I would make a call and get back to them."

Mr Taylor then called down to Dunedin, speaking to Ben Sharpe, who had designed the graphic of Brisbane used in the lead-up to the Ashes.

Mr Sharpe was not sure either whether the images could be flooded but said he would try a few things.

Mr Taylor then boarded a plane to Christchurch.

By the time he checked his email at Christchurch Airport, Mr Sharpe had sent Nine Network, and Mr Taylor, screen shots of the Brisbane flooding.

"I was thinking great, maybe we can do something within a week of moving graphics.

"But when I got to Dunedin, there was a phone call from the network saying 'thanks for the graphics and they will be on television tonight'," Mr Taylor said.

By the time Mr Taylor had flown from Auckland to Dunedin, Mr Sharpe had designed and sent the flooding graphics.

The only change that had to be made was the depth of the water which was about a metre too high in the first graphics sent over.

"People talk about the isolation of Dunedin but it is not true when it comes to technology."
