A new beer has proved a hit with the band which inspired it.

Emerson's Brewery released its latest Dunedin Sound Series beer, North by North, at the Inch Bar on Wednesday.

The beer is a tribute to the Bats' single North by North, which appeared on its 1987 debut album.

"It's fantastic. It would be one of the more unusual tributes we've had," Bats singer-songwriter Robert Scott said at the launch of the Czechoslovakian-style pilsner.

It is the fourth Emerson's Dunedin Sound Series tribute release, following the Chills Rolling Moon, the Clean's Tally Ho! and the Verlaines' Bird Dog.

Emerson's Brewery owner Richard Emerson said he was a big fan of the 1980s Dunedin bands.

"I used to go to all the concerts in the '80s."

Inch Bar owner Jon Simcock said the Dunedin Sound Series had been a big hit with customers.

"They think it's absolutely great. People hang out for them to change. They're always asking me: 'When's the next one coming?"'
