Most New Zealand workers will miss out on having Anzac Day as a paid public holiday this year because it falls on a Saturday.
The exceptions would be those workers who normally worked on that day, such as retail staff or those on seven-day rosters, Otago-Southland Employers Association acting chief executive Diana Hudson said.
People working on Anzac Day would receive time and a-half and a day in lieu.
The complication came through businesses not being able to trade until noon on Anzac Day.
That meant employers would pay their rostered on staff for not working the first part of the day before paying them time and a-half and a day in lieu for the rest of the time they worked.
Anzac Day and Waitangi Day were the two non-transferable public holidays, meaning they had to be taken on the day they fell, she said.
The association had been receiving calls from employers wondering about the day and what the pay rates were.
There had been no complaints about workers asking for another day off because the holiday fell on a Saturday.
Anzac Day falls on a Sunday next year.
However, according to the 2011 calendar, Anzac Day falls on Easter Monday. That could mean workers asking for another day's holiday, Ms Hudson said.
