The family operated stores in South Dunedin, George St and Mosgiel, until closing the latter two shops in 2000. The Mosgiel shop had been open for 30 years, owner Lindsay Campbell said.
While retailing was still in difficult times at present, Mr Campbell said yesterday several factors had influenced reopening the Mosgiel outlet, including growth in the township, demand, dwindling competition and the opportunity for another family member to be involved.
Nephew and fifth generation Campbell, Bevan, whose father Don last ran the Mosgiel branch, will be joined by Melanie Ward, plus casual staff.
Mr Campbell said a separate stock clearance sale in Mosgiel last month was well supported and popular, with most customers asking if Campbell's would consider reopening.
"Since the consolidation [2000], we've changed the company, with more emphasis on the big brands, such as RM Williams, Canterbury, Cambridge and Line 7," Mr Campbell said.
The mainstay South Dunedin branch has origins dating back to the 1890s, with the Campbells coming aboard in 1937. This was just after the depression, which had prompted large-scale business closures.
Fit-out of the Gordon St premises is well advanced and it will be opened on Wednesday.
