Following several calls to the Otago Daily Times yesterday, Anderson Lloyd chairman Stephen Christensen confirmed when contacted the redundancy proposal.
"We have just started consulting with the 16 people affected and are waiting to see what they come back with.
"A decision is several weeks away yet," he said.
He said the redundancies, affecting about eight lawyers and eight support staff, were prompted by the effect of the recession on the law firm's clients and would enable Anderson Lloyd to be "well positioned for the future".
The Dunedin head office would feel the "greatest effect" of the proposed redundancies but staff in Queenstown and Christchurch would also be affected, he said.
Last week, Anderson Lloyd celebrated that 45%, or 14, of the firms' partners were women; the highest percentage of any firm in the country.
The company has 31 partners, four consultants and 14 associates listed on its website and its work covers most types of legal advice.
