Bequest makes new ambulance possible

St John's Dunedin service will get a new ambulance this week thanks to the bequest of a supporter, but a new station in South Dunedin is still some way off.

The $150,000 ambulance will be dedicated at a service in Dunedin this week.

It will replace an older ambulance, which will be relocated to an as yet undetermined station in St John's southern region.

The Dunedin ambulance was bought following a bequest from the late Maxwell Richdale, of Dunedin.

St John southern region general manager Gary Williams said St John was grateful for the generosity of Mr Richdale and his family.

St John spokeswoman Alena Lynch said a new station in South Dunedin was still in the design stages.

It was decided to build a new station after a trial found response times were improved when an ambulance was based in South Dunedin.

One ambulance would be based at the station, which St John hoped would be opened in late August to mid-September.

The plans would still have to go through the consent process once the design was complete.
