So it is all done and dusted and we are down to two — Varsity and Taieri meet in a repeat of last year’s final. Really all this for that!
The quarterfinals produced the biggest upset since Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson in Tokyo 1990. So Taieri, Kaikorai and Dunedin (the top three seeds) were all beaten, meaning Kaikorai and Dunedin drop out and Taieri stays in as highest-placed loser.
Well, after all the trials, tribulations, permutations, forecasting and predicting, we have finally found our top six to duel it out this coming weekend.
Dunedin was too fast out wide for Southern and grabbed the five points and jumped into third to make it safe while Southern is in a head-to-head shootout with AU to make the Dunedin premier club playoffs next weekend.
The Taieri Eels just keep on winning and, conversely, their neighbour, GI, just keeps on losing.
Now I’m really confused after a round that defies belief. Harbour thrashed Kaik at the High Veldt to go to 20 points so seems assured of making the six. Taieri walloped Southern at the Eelpit and is in the six and, with its run, should be top qualifier and win the Gallaway. It has finally given itself a points differential.
Southern just about wrapped up a top six spot with a hard fought victory over the winless Spannerheads, who languish on two points with three to play — they are consigned to the bottom two in a season that promised so much.
The Eels did what they do and strangled the life out of Varsity to confirm a spot in the six.
Taieri did what it does, stay in games, bore the life out of teams and get the chocolates, and consigned Harbour to its second loss in three games.
The Hawks posted their first points of the season and ensured GI stayed winless with a solid display at the Toolbox.
We’ve made some changes to the ODT/Speight's Player of the Year competition
