Magnitude 4.8 quake hits upper South Island

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake rattled the top of the South Island on Friday morning.

The 9km-deep quake struck 10 km south of Seddon about 8.20am, Geonet said.

More than 1300 people from Wellington to Christchurch have reported feeling the quake.

Geonet described the shaking as "strong".
