A well known, quake-damaged former Canterbury hotel has failed to sell at auction.

The old Hororata Hotel building on Hororata Rd was damaged in the 2010 earthquake and has not been operated as a hotel since.

The listing on the Bayleys website said: “Whilst considerable repairs have been undertaken, it remains uninsured and accordingly is offered for sale by auction on an ‘as is where is’ basis.”

There were no bids at the auction last week.

The rateable value of the property is $530,000.

The land is valued at $165,000 and the building is $365,000.

“We are still just chipping away on it. We have a few people just floating around but nothing solid at this stage,” real estate agent Richard Innes said.

"What is most special about the property is its historic feel.

“It’s a great community structure and building and there are a lot of happy memories there for people over the years.

"People would love to see it reinstated again but it's probably more likely that someone will look at it for a BnB or something like that.

"We’ve had people looking at it as a potential home too,” he said.

The listing says the building features 10 bedrooms, six double and four single, large living, dining and/or function spaces, a kitchen with storage room, plus a previous commercial kitchen and three bathrooms, including six toilets.

It has been re-carpeted and the original cellar is still accessible.

In recent years, the building has been used as residential accommodation.

The outbuildings include a three-bay shed, double garage, pump shed and two garden sheds.

The 9000 sq m land parcel next to Cordys Stream could be subdivided and offers extensive views to Mt Hutt and the surrounding area.

Mr Innes said owning the building is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“It feels like, after what happened at the Kirwee Tavern, too, we are losing all of our historic pubs.

"So it would be nice if we can get someone to jump in there and take it on and bring it back to its former glory,” he said.

The Kirwee Tavern was destroyed in a fire that broke out at 11.50pm on Christmas Eve last year.
